Express moped kick start conversion is the way-to-go if your noped's starter spring is broken! You will not need any new parts, just a welding device to tack weld metal in place. Note: You will need to heat the starter spring up and rotate it 180 degrees. Then bend it out to make the kick start catch. Here are the steps (see diagram below for parts illustration):

- [NOT NEEDED, BUT EASIER] - Remove ENGINE from FRAME
- Remove the STARTER LEVER/PEDAL
- Remove the transmission L-COVER (white cover)
- Remove STARTER STOPPER
- Remove DRIVE PLATE
- You should leave the KICK RECOIL SPRING in the L-COVER
- Remove STARTER DRIVE SPROCKET
- Remove STARTER ARM & ARM SPRING
- Tack weld (aka spot weld) the STARTER DRIVE SPROCKET in 3-4 places. This will involve tack welding the STARTER SPROCKET to the STARTER RATCHET (see diagram 1-A below).

- Place the STARTER DRIVE SPROCKET you just tack welded back into place.
- Wrap the STARTER CHAIN around the STARTER DRIVE SPROCKET and other DRIVE SPROCKET (attached to CRANKSHAFT)
- Reverse STARTER LEVER/PEDAL and tack weld the PEDAL on STARTER LEVER
- Replace L-COVER
- Replace welded STARTER LEVER/PEDAL

Can you please be more specific on what to do with the spring that we are supposed to change and move 180 degrees? I'm done with all of the other steps and this is the part I can't figure out. Thanks.

So I thought my 78 NC50 had a broken spring, so I took the cover off this weekend, and as soon as I removed the cover, the spring released it's tension. Apparently the spring was good, but for some reason it won't turn over the engine. Do you think my motor could be seized up? I can put the cover back on, crank it up, press the brake and nothing happens, then as soon as I remove the cover and the spring teeth release from the drive sproket, the tension in the spring is released. Should I be able to freely turn the drive sproket? Or is there anything else I could be missing?

Nice video, explanation. After finishing this process did you end up with and extra arm spring ? I am trying to fix the wind up starter on my 1980 nc50. I seem to be missing this spring which holds the starter arm in place. Without it, once assembled, it works a few times then fails to catch when you press down on the winding pedal. If you have an extra - would you sell one to me?
